Take Me Home, Country Road...

At this point, we are six weeks into the #stayathome orders due to Covid-19.  And like many others, we are getting a serious case of cabin fever.  Over the weekend, we drove many southern Vermont back country roads - just to get out of the house!  The trip was beneficial, though, as we found several pieces of property that would be perfect for our future Vermont cabin!

We are fortunate that in our little corner of Vermont, we have 5 covered bridges within a 10 mile radius - 3 in Bennington, 1 in Arlington and 1 in Chiselville, but all 5 in Bennington County.  On our weekend drive, we discovered farm property that was surrounded by three of these covered bridges and the Walloomsac River - in other words, to get to the property would require driving thru one or more of them.  How Vermont would that be?

The first bridge we came to was the Silk Covered Bridge.  It is a lattice truss bridge, probably built in 1840 to carry Silk Road across the Walloomsac River in Bennington.

Just a couple of miles down river is the Paper Mill Village Bridge. This bridge, also called the Bennington Falls Covered Bridge is a wooden truss covered bridge built in 1889. This bridge carries Murphy Road across the Walloomsac River.

Just a couple more miles down river is the Burt Henry Covered Bridge. This bridge, also a lattice truss bridge, was built around 1840, and was rebuilt in 1989.  It was Bennington County's oldest covered bridge. This bridge carries River Road across the Walloomsac River.

The covered bridges are just one of the many things that makes me love southern Vermont!
