I cannot believe my babies are three years old today!
In 2010, our 17 year old toy poodle Spider's Black Widow ("Widow") passed away.... i lasted all of 24 hours before I was frantically phoning around trying to find a rescue poodle. We decided one standard poodle and one toy poodle would perfectly complete our family.
After searching the web, and a couple of phone calls later, I found a breeder of Standard Parti Poodles who had a pup born with a birth defect, and therefore needed to be 'rescued'. We drove out to the breeders place, and met the pup. She was born with a crippled left front arm - we later found out she was actually born without the ball and socket joint, so she is only able to partially use that leg. It was love at first site! In case you are not familiar with them, Parti's are multi-colored - so instead of being a solid poodle color (black, white, chocolate, apricot, etc) she is white with big chocolate brown spots.
After speaking with us, the breeder decided we would be a good fit for the pup, so she started gathering up the shot records, etc. During this time, the runt of the litter waddled through the room we were in, and Michael had to have her!
Needless to say, it was quite a transition from one 17 year old, 10 pound toy poodle to two standard poodle puppies - but they were just what the doctor ordered!!! The average standard poodle female (from what I've read) is a whopping 42 to 45 pounds - these babies weigh in at 80 to 85 pounds each!!!
During the past three years, we've had our share of ups and downs - but I wouldn't trade them for anything! There is nothing better on a cold winter night than snuggling in a warm bed with my girls!
Happy Birthday September Sun (Sunny) and October Rust (Rusty) - I love you more than you will ever know!
