For recipes that call for chicken stock, we prefer to make our own. On a weekend where we don't have any plans, we will slow cook an organic fryer and then freeze all the chicken stock - and use it for recipes, or give the girls (a.k.a. the poodles - September Sun, October Rust and Lilith) a special treat with their food.
The recipe is really simple, and the slow cooker makes it even easier!
Ingredients:
1 whole organic fryer chicken
Salt
Pepper
Organic Celery
Organic Onions
Organic Carrots
Instructions: Combine all ingredients in slow cooker and cook for 8 hours. Vary the amounts of each ingredient to your specific tastes (e.g. Michael does not care for celery, so we put only a couple of stalks in). When the cooking process is done, strain the stock and pour into freezable containers, label, and put into freezer. De-bone the chicken, and freeze, or use in recipes that week (like gumbo, or burritos, etc).
We give the girls the cooked carrots and celery - however, onions are not a recommended food for dogs, which is something to keep in mind if your broth is extra onion-y. We use minimal onions, and so far the girls have had no problems with the broth.
